The NJ DERA Fund – The SBRN Disaster/Emergency Rapid Assistance (DERA) Fund was initially started to provide emergency assistance to people with spina bifida following a crisis precipitated by an event such as a natural disaster, fire, accident or other emergency. During this time of public health crisis, the fund is now focusing on emergent needs during the coronavirus pandemic.
The DERA Fund helps individuals from New Jersey with acquiring medical supplies, covering non-reimbursable medical costs, assisting with adaptive equipment or other basic needs (e.g., food or other supplies) in response to an urgent need during the pandemic.

The Jane Horowitz Special Medical Needs Fund (SMNF) – Children born with spina bifida often require dozens of surgeries throughout their childhoods and into adulthood. In addition, their complex medical needs require numerous doctor visits, procedures, medications and assistive devices. The costs can be astronomical over time, and insurance rarely covers all of the expenses. Our Jane Horowitz Special Medical Needs Fund has been providing relief to families and individuals struggling with non-reimbursed medical expenses since 2000. The fund offers financial assistance to SBRN members in New Jersey impacted by high medical costs related to spina bifida, which are not covered through private or public medical insurance programs or other sources of funding. The fund provides partial reimbursement for funds expended the previous year.

The “Empowered Traveler” Scholarship Fund – SBRN has funding for a limited number of Empowered Traveler Scholarships to assist individuals with attending conferences or other educational events. These scholarships are intended to partially cover meeting and travel expenses for people to attend educational meetings related to their disability who, due to financial need, otherwise would not be able to attend.
