During these difficult times, please consider supporting the children and adults that the Spina Bifida Resource Network (SBRN) serves. It is especially imperative now that we support people living with disabilities during the coronavirus pandemic. People with disabilities such as spina bifida often have multiple healthcare issues that can worsen or cause concern, and they are unsure when or if they can see the doctor. In addition, the need to self-isolate during the pandemic can lead to anxiety and depression. Your gift will help people address their healthcare and mental health concerns. It will also ease financial burdens for families with high medical costs or with emergent needs during this public health crisis.
The current crisis has changed how we all live and work. The SBRN has been hard at work adapting our programs and funds to support individuals and families living with disabilities. Because of the generosity of people like you, we continue to be able to serve our community through special, unique programs such as our:
Family Support Program – Although we cannot currently visit people in their homes, our staff have been reaching out and responding through phone calls, emails and text messages to ensure that we provide assistance and guidance on healthcare and social issues.
Financial Assistance – We have re-purposed our Disaster/Emergency Rapid Assistance (DERA) Fund to meet the emergent needs of people during the pandemic to help cover one-time needs for medical supplies, adaptive equipment and other basic needs. We also provide funds for unreimbursed medical costs for our members through our Special Medical Needs Fund (SMNF).
Support Groups – We have developed new video chats and teleconferences, such as our weekly “Afternoon Conversations” with adults with disabilities to stay connected and supported. We have also developed the Virtual Empowerment Series, which are informational and interactive virtual workshops and activities with guest speakers on a variety of topics.
Resources –We developed a Resources Page specific to the coronavirus for our website to go along with our extensive list of resources regarding healthcare, education, advocacy and much more. We also distribute current information through our Empowerment Zone newsletter and on social media.
Advocacy-We are continuously advocating at the federal, state and local levels on issues such as SSI, Medicaid and the coronavirus, as well as protecting the rights of students and adults with disabilities.
You can make these programs happen and assure that the SBRN is here for families now and in the future. Join us by giving today – no amount is too large or too small! Think of the lives we can change together!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
