Education & Recreation

The SBRN educates the community and we also educate ourselves! We hold conferences for adults with spina bifida and parents of children with spina bifida where experts address medical issues, relationships, advocacy and independent living. We also sponsor our annual Adult Empowerment Retreat, which is a fun, informative, interactive weekend that includes educational seminars, recreational activities and social events exclusively for adults living with disabilities.

When we are able, we host social and recreational events throughout the year for children, adults and families. For example, we have hosted skating events, swimming opportunities, circus fun, visits to museums and other outings. These events provide accessible, entertaining and challenging activities for everyone and provide a sense of community and camaraderie.

We also raise awareness of spina bifida and living with disabilities.  At our annual Walk for Empowerment, participants stroll and roll to show solidarity and increase familiarity with living with spina bifida.  We educate health professionals, school personnel and service providers about how to support people with spina bifida.  We also present information about spina bifida at conferences, health fairs and other venues throughout the State.
