Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology (AT) is any device which helps facilitate a person’s functioning , e.g., mobility, personal care, activities of daily living, learning, work, recreation, etc. It can dramatically improve a person’s quality of life and level of independence.

Important considerations to ensure full benefit from an aid include, e.g.,

  1. a well defined plan of research and advocacy for acquiring the equipment
  2. a good evaluation by a qualified professional
  3. a trial period before purchase, when possible
  4. thorough training in the use of the device
  5. technical assistance support.

Information about acquiring AT is available through the following resources and SBRN.
